Before High School (AAU):
Curt was a two-time United States Wrestling Federation (USWF) Kids National Champion (1975-76), Colorado State Freestyle Champion (1975, 1979) and Colorado State Greco-Roman Champion (1978, 1979).. Topping placed 2nd in National AAU Wrestling Tournament (1977) and the US Junior World Tournament Champion Freestyle (1978)...He was invited to the US Olympic development camp (1979)...The "TopCat" travelled with the 1978 US Junior World Team that wrestled in Poland, Russia, Czechoslovakia...Curt was a member of the 3rd Place team at the AAA State Tournament (1979).
High School:
Attended Pueblo South H.S... Four year letterwinner wrestling for the Colts...Topping defeated a defending State Champion each year to win his State Titles...Defeated Chris Mondragon from Wheat Ridge H.S. as a Junior and Duane Goldman from Cheyenne Mountain H.S. as a senior...Goldman's only high school losses were to Topping and he was a four time NCAA Finalist.

Attended Garden City, Jr. College (GCJC) from 1980-81 and University of Southern Colorado (1983-84)...Curt wrestled at the College level NCAA in Garden City, Kansas and NAIA while attending University of Southern Colorado...Topping was the first Conference Champion at 134 LBS. for the University of Southern Colorado (now CSU-Pueblo) wrestling program.
