Before High School:
Tony played a year (1955) of football as an end and track (1956) throwing the discus... Participated for two seasons (1955-56) in basketball, playing center for Keating Junior High.

High School:
Attended Pueblo Central H.S., graduating in 1959...Hegler played for three years (1956-59) as a center on the Wildcats basketball team...Earned All-Conference honors in 1959...Played in the 1959 North/South All Stars basketball game as a center...Hegler also played three seasons (1957-59) of baseball (1st base).

College:
Went to the University of Colorado for one year (1959-60) and played forward on the Buffaloes basketball team before transferring to Pueblo Junior College for a season (1961) and played baseball (1st base)...Finished his collegiate career at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, where Hegler played first base on the Rams baseball team for two years (1962-63) before graduating in 1963.

Contributions:
Helger was the Official Scorer for five years (1965-70) at Pueblo Junior College.
