Being a part of the largest class in the 45-year history of the Greater Pueblo Sports Association was memorable for many of the inductees on Wednesday night.

The association inducted 13 more members into its hall of fame at the Fortino Ballroom at Pueblo Community College..

Wednesday's turnout for the banquet and ceremony also was one of the largest in recent years as more than 400 gathered in the ballroom for the festivities.

Dave Perkins, the quarterback on the 1965 Central state championship football team who was an original committee member of the GPSA, was floored by his selection.

"It's fun to be part of it and I'm honored to be part of it," Perkins said. "Most of the classes have about three members so I guess there was more demand or they wanted to fill out the program.

"Really special for me because it's been 45 years since I was part of the original committee. I never dreamed I'd be going in. I was happy to see that it all came about, but I never thought I'd be one of them.

Rich Lane, a three-sport athlete at East who was recognized as an assistant football coach in high school, college and the Pueblo Crusaders, enjoyed every minute of the evening.

"Just to be honored is humbling to me," Lane said. "You get into coaching you don't expect something like this. You don't do it for that reason. It's a who's who of Pueblo and it's quite an honor."

Besides the induction of its new members, the hall presented the Brian Macartney and Jesse Banks and Spank Blasing award winners to high school and CSU-Pueblo student-athletes.

The Brian Mccartney awards went to Centennial's Cara Siegel and Pueblo County's Hunter Willits.

The Jesse Banks was presented to Sydni Riley and the Spank Blasing award to Dante Carter. Both are track and field athletes.

Pueblo West High School earned the Sollie Raso award for its success in head-to-head competition with the other Pueblo schools.

The hall also recognized three Great Moments in Pueblo Sports -- the Central boys tennis teams which won five state championships, the University of Southern Colorado baseball team that made an appearance in the NCAA Division II World Series and Mary Saiz, one of the top girls prep swimmers in the history of the city.

The 13 inductees join a list of sports heroes, stars and those who have made Pueblo sports history memorable.

"The list includes the horses of all-time and the gals, too," Perkins said. "It's a special honor, kind of makes you open your eyes and say I'm pretty doggone lucky to be considered."
